Root Chakra

Aromatherapy for your Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is connected to your health and sense of security. Blockages in this area can lower sex drive, cause lethargy and increase susceptibility to illness. When over-active, this Chakra encourages selfishness and antisocial behaviour. For these reasons, you can probably see why it's important to keep your Root Chakra balanced - for the happiness and wellbeing of yourself and others. Woody and fresh oils stimulate the Root Chakra when it is blocked or under-active, and antiseptic oils helps antidote it when it is over-active.

Root Chakra Healing

Massage around the base of the spine is probably the best method of using oils with the Root Chakra, although inhalation is another good way to stimulate and antidote this energy centre. For persistent problems, make an aromatherapy cream for regular application to the base of the spine.

Remedy Checklist

Certain essential oils are particularly useful for the Root Chakra.

Cedarwood

This is a reputed aphrodisiac, but best avoided during pregnancy.

Patchouli

This oil actually improves with age and is another aphrodisiac.

Peppermint

A cooling oil that helps to gently stimulate the Root Chakra. It is another that should be avoided during pregnancy.

Vetivert

Vetivert is excellent for treating PMS

Myrrh

A stimulating oil that is good for PMS, but best avoided during pregnancy.

Pine

Pine has a refreshing effect, but can irritate sensitive skins. It's best to carry out a patch test first.

Tea tree

Cleansing and cooling, tea tree is renowned for its rebalancing properties. Unfortunately, this oil has been known to irritate sensitive skin.

Eucalyptus

The properties of eucalyptus cool and refresh the Root Chakra. Avoid using this oil if you are pregnant.

Oils for your Root Chakra

Balance your Root Chakra with aromatherapy techniques, such as inhalation, massages or atomiser sprays, to avoid low sex drive and poor resilience to illness.

For Sexual Problems

When the energies of the Root Chakra are blocked this can lead to sexual problems such as poor sex drive, frigidity or premature ejaculation. Obviously, in a loving relationship this can be very distressing for both partners. If your friend is experiencing problems in her relationship, offer to help with a stimulating massage targeted on the Root Chakra.

Massaging oils beneficial to this Chakra (as listed above) into the base of the spine is an ideal way to stimulate its activity again. Use slow, clockwise, circular motions and gentle sideways strokes to activate its energies.

Avoid Frequent Illness

Another problem that can arise from an under-active or blocked Root Chakra is lethargy, which can lower your immunity and so lead to frequent illness. A variety of methods can help antidote this condition and boost your energy to leave you with a feeling of general good health.

  • Running a warm bath and adding essential oils is one good technique - and also very relaxing.
  • Another helpful aid is inhalation. Make an atomiser spray to carry with you. Burn oils on a burner. Put a few drops of oil on a handkerchief. Or carry a bottle of the oil to inhale.

Selfish Behaviour

An over-active Root Chakra can lead to very antisocial behaviour such as egotism, selfishness, bullying and crude language. To help counteract these effects use antidote oils to calm the Root Chakra's energies and return your balance.

  • Massage is a good way to do this - apply gentle sideways strokes. Also use anticlockwise circles, as this helps make you more open to others.
  • Applying essential oils to the pulse points when you feel your behaviour is inappropriate can also help.
