Bergamot Soap

These handmade, Elizabethan-style soap balls are well worth making. They are moisturising and have a slightly exfoliating effect on the skin. The essential oils give the soap a delightful smell but provide no colouring so your finished balls will be the same colour as the soap you start with.

You will need:

  • 250g unperfumed vegetable oil soap
  • 25g medium ground oatmeal
  • 2 tsp liquid coconut oil
  • 1 drop pure lemongrass essential oil
  • 2 drops pure bergamot essential oil
  • 2 drops pure lemon essential oil
  1. Grate the soap into a heat-resistant mixing bowl and stir in a little water (in the ratio of one part water to two parts soap). Put over a gentle heat in a double saucepan, stirring all the time, until the mixture becomes a thick paste.
  2. Remove the bowl from the heat and add the oatmeal and coconut oil, mixing thoroughly. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the essential oils.
  3. Divide the mixture into equal-sized portions and roll each into a neat ball. Leave the balls to harden overnight on a wire rack. Wrap in tissue paper or store in a screw-top jar in a cool place.

Bergamot Surface Cleaner

Because bergamot has powerful antiseptic qualities it makes a great surface cleaner. Its clean, citrus aroma makes it especially good for use in the kitchen and bathroom. However, as will all essential oils, avoid contact with wooden surfaces and do a small patch test on a non-visible area if you are in any doubt about how water-resistant your surface is.

1 litre tap water
5 drops pure bergamot essential oil

Mix the solution and use in a plant spray bottle, spraying it on and then wiping it off surfaces.
