Anatomy and Physiology: The Urinary System

Urinary System Structure and Function

Urinary system

The urinary system removes waste products from the blood and eliminates them from the body. Other functions include regulation of the volume of body fluids and balance of the pH and electrolyte composition of these fluids.urinary-system-labeled-diagram

Structure of the urinary system:

  • Kidneys – function – extract waste from the blood, balance body fluids, and form urine
  • Ureters – function – conduct urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder
  • Bladder – function – receives and stores the urine brought to it by the two ureters.
  • Urethra – function – conducts urine from the bladder to the outside of the body for elimination
